Producing objects with clay, either functional or aesthetic, has been done for centuries. Ceramics has always been of interest to me; the way in which a simple ball of earth can be transformed into an admirable object to be looked at, used and treasured. My work is influenced by shape and the silhouette of the human form with its curves and shadows, coiling the form up using a profile taken from my drawings. Colour is introduced with oxides and glaze stains to create rich variations of natural, earthy shades, helping to bring the pieces together.
Surface texture is equally important as this is what draws the viewer into touching and holding the work. This is achieved using different clay bodies; with grogged clay bodies adding a gritty surface and white specks. Each piece is similar in style, but has a unique and individual shape and identity. Organic, movement, non- symmetrical, human form, tangible, tactile, smooth, feeling, touch, caress, rough, colour, patter nation, imperfections, clean lines, matt, shinny, shape, structure, free, desirable, skill, life, figurative, rich, strong, powerful, layer, texture, together.
