Ceramics are familiar; they are items with which people interact on a daily basis. This relationship between object and owner is of great interest to me and the aim of my work is to deepen this dialogue by provoking thought and query. Each piece at first appears standard and it is only with time and closeness that the true character of the work is revealed engendering an intimacy between item and audience.

The essentially ordinary forms conceal distinct details such as raised bases and precious glazing, inspired by recent travels that are only apparent upon deepening your rapport with the object by handling it. Furthermore, if you look closely, each piece has its own character, its own message; delicate imprinted words are used to incite contemplation and strengthen the object-owner conversation.

The formulation of these words aims to question our views of ourselves, the people around us, the world we live in and faith. This level of relationship requires a willingness to be challenged from the viewer (and maker!) but offers the safety of not requiring an answer.

My ceramics are designed to be involved in an object-owner relationship; they are fragile and ask to be looked after but seek vulnerability from the owner in return thereby developing a deeper attachment and becoming part of the owner’s life story.
