Charlotte Bolsover

The imagination is a very powerful tool: changing the everyday mundane into a world of escapism and intrigue. My work has been inspired by the notion of delving beneath the surface and finding something magical. Nature has been the main influence, looking at the shadows created by organic forms and the forms themselves with their multitude of changing shapes and features. Initially, textile manipulation was the key element of my work, with a strong contrast running through my compositions between natural inspirations and geometric shapes as both possess their own visual rhythms. As my pieces have progressed light and surface have become more pivotal to my work; these elements have assisted my decision making in fabric selection and colour choices. Colour is used to represent contrasts between light and dark, with the process of dyeing becoming increasingly significant to represent changes in light and nature. Layers of delicate fabrics are used in my designs, however this selection took time as they also needed to be stiff to construct folds, revealing the layers of colour and textures beneath. I want people to interact with my work, look closer and escape in the visual delight.
